10 Questions With The Team at 27four | Akona Mlamleli

In this series, we ask members from our team a mix of random questions, 10 to be exact, and see what’s on their mind – the projects they’re working on, things they like, and some surprising facts from the people that are living investments.

We’re joined by Akona Mlamleli, a member of the investment team and Head of Transformation at 27four Investment Managers.

What are you currently working on right now?

Well, 27four has been running a Black Asset Manager Incubator for more than 10 years and I form part of the team that manages the Incubator. The initiative recently brought to life the Progressive Smooth Bonus Fund in partnership with Sanlam where all the underlying asset managers in the portfolio are Black. It’s managed by 27four and Sanlam provides the guarantee and is responsible for the smoothing of the portfolio.

Of course a big project right now is our annual BEE.conomics survey. This will be out in September this year and we’re very much looking forward to sharing the findings – it’s also the 10th anniversary edition so expect a bumper edition.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?

Probably the whole Tesla story, with Elon Musk announcing his decision to take the company private and the Saudi Sovereign Wealth Fund as being the potential funders of the deal.

What are you listening to right now?

I listen to a lot of gospel. I also enjoy the Apple Podcasts app listening to the latest TED Talks and Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations.

If you had a time machine, where would you go right now?

Right here, right now. As a women, today really presents a lot of opportunities women never really have had before.

How do you keep healthy during your busy schedule?

You make the time! I enjoy Boxing, Sweat 1000 and Running. It’s a moment just for myself.

Are you a hunter or gatherer?

I’d have to say both.

What are you working on in your free time?

Tapping in to my entrepreneurial side with my siblings back home [Eastern Cape]. I also travel as often as I can.

Teach us something we don’t know about you.

Well, I played Hockey and Softball for Western Province. I’m also part of a women’s book club which I thoroughly enjoy.

Finally, can you give us a quick savings tip?

Every bit counts. Diversification of your investments and being consistent – forming good savings habits now.
